Intensive Outpatient Program Serving Phoenix, AZ
An Intensive Outpatient Program, or IOP, is structured mental health treatment you attend three assigned days a week, 12 hours in total, while you keep living at home and working. Redefine serves the whole Phoenix metro from one center in Scottsdale. Adults only. Out of network. Built from more than 20 clinical and integrative therapies, matched to what you need.
- Joint Commission Accredited
- Three assigned days a week
- Out-of-Network, Private Pay
- 20+ Therapies Available
Mental Health IOP for the Phoenix Metro
- One program, one team. Phoenix clients are not a satellite caseload. Everyone attends the same program, with the same clinical team, in the same building.
- Built around the drive. Your three treatment days are assigned based on clinical needs, therapist recommendations, program availability, and scheduling needs where possible. Coming from Phoenix, that means grouping your hours so the trip earns its time.
- Therapies run together. More than 20 modalities are on the table. Your therapist, psychiatric provider, and neurofeedback tech work the same week, so nothing waits its turn.
IOP is one level of care. If a different one fits better, we say so.

How Does an IOP Program in Phoenix Work?

Getting Started
Nothing about starting requires living in Scottsdale. The first step is a phone call. We go through what has been happening, what you have already tried, and how three program days would sit against your work week and your drive. Redefine is an out-of-network provider, so coverage and reimbursement vary by plan. Verify your benefits before you start.

A Week in IOP
Three assigned days on site. Twelve hours in total, with sessions Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Fewer days means fuller ones, which is exactly what you want when each day starts with a drive across the Valley. Group and skills work sit next to individual therapy, neurofeedback, and body-based sessions rather than after them.

What Comes Next
IOP ends when the structure stops adding something. For most people that means moving to individual sessions at a lighter cadence, with psychiatric follow-up still coordinated. The drive gets easier to justify when it is once a week instead of three. Some use a private retreat for focused work on one thing instead.

The IOP Treatment Process, Step by Step
You Call, We Listen
The first conversation is a phone call. Not a form. We ask what has been happening and what you have already tried. If IOP is the wrong level for you, in either direction, we say so and point you toward the one that fits.
Assessment Shapes the Plan
A clinical assessment comes before your first day. It sets which modalities go into your week and in what order. Your psychiatric provider reviews medication at the same time, not weeks in.
Three Days of Coordinated Care
Then the week starts. You drive in for three program days; the other four stay yours. Twelve hours mixing group work, individual therapy, neurofeedback, and body-based sessions, with a team that talks about your case while you are still in the week it happened.
Planning What Comes After
What moves you out is your response, not a date on a form. Some people step up to day treatment. Most move to a lighter cadence of individual work with psychiatric follow-up still in place.
IOP is built to fit a working week. Twelve hours is real time and it does ask something of you, but it is not a full-time commitment. If you are commuting from Phoenix, say so at intake. Your three treatment days are assigned based on clinical needs, therapist recommendations, program availability, and scheduling needs where possible.
- Mental Health Conditions
IOP Treatment for Anxiety, Depression, Trauma and PTSD
IOP for Anxiety and Depression
By the time people call us, most have tried weekly therapy. It helped, and it stopped being enough. Anxiety and depression feed each other, so we treat them inside one plan rather than as separate problems: anxiety treatment runs alongside depression work and neurofeedback in the same week.
What this can include
- Generalized anxiety (GAD)
- Major depression
- Social anxiety
- Panic disorder
- Persistent depressive disorder
- Mixed anxiety and depression
Three assigned days a week gives that plan enough contact to move. The same clinicians see you each program day, and when your response says the mix needs to change, it changes.
IOP for Trauma and PTSD
Trauma work needs somewhere for hard material to land. In IOP, processing sessions such as EMDR and somatic work sit inside a week that also carries regulation and support, so you are not opening something on Tuesday and holding it alone until next month. Our PTSD treatment paces that work deliberately, clinician-led.
What this can include
- PTSD
- Complex PTSD (C-PTSD)
- Acute stress disorder
- Childhood trauma
- Developmental trauma
- Relational trauma
The body is part of this work, not an afterthought. Nervous system regulation runs in the same weeks as processing, so the two support each other.
IOP for Dual Diagnosis
Treating a mental health condition and a substance use disorder separately tends to leave one of them running. Our dual diagnosis treatment holds both inside one plan and one team, person-first and without the moralizing. We are not a detox facility. This level suits people who have already stabilized.
What this can include
- Anxiety with substance use
- Depression with substance use
- Trauma with substance use
- Alcohol use disorder
- Process addictions
- Medication management
Both conditions are reviewed by one team in one week. Therapy, group support, and medication coordination see the whole picture rather than half of it.
IOP for Bipolar and Mood Disorders
Mood conditions need medication and structure moving together. Here your psychiatric provider and your therapist share the same week, so a medication change and what you report in group are one conversation, not two. Bipolar disorder treatment is coordinated rather than handed off between offices.
What this can include
- Bipolar I disorder
- Bipolar II disorder
- Cyclothymic disorder
- Mixed episodes
- Rapid cycling
- Mood instability
Three set days a week builds a rhythm, and rhythm is part of the treatment. Changes on one side of your care reach the other quickly.
IOP for Grief and Loss
Grief that stays overwhelming months or years later is not a failure of will. Our grief treatment uses somatic approaches and EMDR to help the nervous system hold what feels unbearable. No timeline is imposed. The aim is capacity to carry the loss, not a date to be over it.
What this can include
- Complicated grief
- Traumatic loss
- Anticipatory grief
- Disenfranchised grief
- Loss of a relationship
- Multiple losses
Grief tends to isolate, and treatment should not. Group support sits alongside individual work, with the same clinicians three days a week.
IOP for Burnout and Chronic Stress
High-functioning people push until they cannot. Many of our clients look fine from the outside and are running on empty underneath. Because IOP fits around a working week, our burnout treatment does not ask you to step away from the job while you address what chronic stress has done to your nervous system.
What this can include
- Professional burnout
- Compassion fatigue
- Chronic stress
- Work and life imbalance
- Perfectionism
- Sleep disruption
Treatment looks at the patterns that produced the burnout, not only the exhaustion itself. Which three days you attend is worked out around your work.

A Sample IOP Week: Three Assigned Days, 12 Hours a Week
Day 1
Day 2
Day 3
This is a sample pattern, not a fixed schedule. Your three treatment days are assigned based on clinical needs, therapist recommendations, program availability, and scheduling needs where possible. If you are driving in from Phoenix, that conversation can include the commute. Your clinical team sets what goes into each day and changes it as you respond. Sessions run Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Real Connection, Support, & Healing
Our Scottsdale outpatient programs combine innovative neuroscience with proven therapeutic approaches.
More Therapies, Better Outcomes
IOP is built from over 20 clinical and integrative approaches, and all of it happens in person. You will not get all of them. Because the week is shorter than day treatment, what goes into it matters more, so your clinical team selects the combination that fits your presentation rather than working from a preset list. Those sessions run together in the same week instead of in stages.
Ask which of these belong in your week. That is a real conversation.

- Evidence and Standards
Where Intensive Outpatient Treatment Fits in Mental Health Care
Inside the Standard of Care
1 / 5Medicare describes intensive outpatient programs as a level of care that sits between traditional once-weekly therapy or counseling and inpatient or partial hospitalization psychiatric care. That is the level this page describes.
Medicare describes this level as fitting people whose care plan calls for at least 9 hours of therapeutic services each week, and as more intensive than the care you would get in a doctor's or therapist's office.
In 2022, an estimated 15.4 million U.S. adults had a serious mental illness, which is 6.0% of all adults, per the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
For comparison, Medicare describes partial hospitalization as usually including between 4 and 8 hours of care each day, as an alternative to inpatient psychiatric care. That is the step up from IOP.
Redefine's IOP runs three assigned days a week, 12 hours weekly, serving the Phoenix metro from one Scottsdale center. That sits inside the intensity range Medicare describes for this level of care, and below the range it describes for the level above.

- Giving You The Answers You Need
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an IOP with housing in Phoenix, Arizona?
Redefine does not offer housing. Our Intensive Outpatient Program is outpatient by design: you live at home anywhere in the Phoenix metro and attend three assigned days a week at our Scottsdale center. Programs that pair IOP with housing are a different model, usually tied to residential care. If that is the level of support you need, we will say so and point you toward it.
Is IOP like rehab?
No. IOP is a level of outpatient mental health care, not residential rehab. There is no stay. You attend structured treatment 12 hours a week, then go home to your own life between program days.We treat adults with anxiety, depression, trauma, and co-occurring substance use, and the language stays person-first throughout.
How many hours a week is IOP?
Twelve hours, across three assigned days. Sessions run Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Treatment days are assigned based on clinical needs, therapist recommendations, program availability, and scheduling needs where possible. That is enough clinical time to change something, inside a week you can still work in.
What are the signs that someone needs an IOP?
The clearest sign is that weekly therapy is not holding. Symptoms escalate between appointments, work or relationships start to slip, and one hour a week has stopped being enough. IOP adds structure without an overnight stay. We wrote a longer guide on the signs you may need an IOP, and our team can talk it through with you by phone.
Do you treat people who live in Phoenix?
Yes. Phoenix and the wider metro are part of our service area, and clients drive in for program days. There is one center, at 8245 N 85th Way in Scottsdale, and no second location inside Phoenix itself. We treat adults only.
Can I keep working during IOP?
That is what this level is built for. Twelve hours a week is real time and it will need planning, especially with a drive from Phoenix, but it is not a full-time commitment and there is no overnight stay. We cover the details in our guide to working during IOP.
Does insurance cover IOP at Redefine?
Redefine is an out-of-network provider. Coverage and reimbursement vary by plan, and neither is guaranteed, so verify your benefits before you start. Our team handles benefit questions by phone at (888) 546-5580.
How is IOP different from a Partial Hospitalization Program?
The difference is hours. The intensive outpatient level runs three assigned days a week for 12 hours; PHP runs five days a week for 25 to 30 hours, five to six hours a day. IOP fits around work and family. PHP is for people who need daily structure.
