- Inside PTSD Treatment
PTSD Treatment Beyond Talk Therapy
Redefine Wellness & Treatment is a Joint Commission accredited outpatient mental health treatment center in North Scottsdale. PTSD treatment here is nervous-system-focused and trauma-informed: your plan addresses the memories, the body’s alarm responses and the habits that grow around them, rather than relying on conversation alone. Deep Brain Reorienting leads the trauma work, neurofeedback runs alongside your therapy sessions, and psychiatric care sits on the same team. You choose between a full-day program and a three-day-a-week program, and a private Intensive Trauma Retreat is there for people who want concentrated work.
- Deep Brain Reorienting first among the trauma therapies, with EMDR, Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing and IFS alongside it
- Neurofeedback built into treatment rather than added on, with the amount set by your plan
- Gender-specific care, with women in their own group
- Psychiatric evaluation and medication management from the same team, when medication belongs in your plan
- PHP five days a week, or IOP on three assigned days so treatment fits around work and family
- Residential locations through Redefine's partner Saguaro Recovery for clients traveling in or wanting additional support

What PTSD and Complex PTSD Can Look Like
Memory and thinking
Unwanted memories can push in without warning, and a flashback can make part of the past feel as if it is happening again. Concentrating on ordinary tasks can take real effort.
The body
The body can stay on alert long after the danger has passed. That can mean a strong startle at small sounds, muscles that stay tight, and sleep that will not settle.
Behavior and habits
Avoidance is common: steering around certain places, people, conversations or anything else that brings the memory back. Over time, the list of things to avoid can grow.
Work and relationships
A person may feel detached from the people closest to them, stay on edge at work or at home, and pull back when others try to get close.
- The Science of PTSD
What's Happening in the Brain and Body With PTSD
PTSD is not only a memory problem. A 2018 review in the Harvard Review of Psychiatry describes it as closely tied to two things the brain does: it learns fear, linking a sound, a place or a face with danger, and it later has to learn that the danger has passed. In PTSD that second step can stall. The alarm keeps firing at reminders, the body stays braced, and sleep, concentration and patience all pay for it.
That is why treatment at Redefine reaches the body’s responses and the nervous system as well as the memories themselves. Trauma-focused therapy, body-based work and neurofeedback each take on a different part of that picture, and your plan is built after an assessment of where it is stuck for you.
- Our Approach
More Than One Way Into PTSD Treatment
PTSD rarely stays in one place. It can sit in memory, in the body’s alarm responses and in the habits that form around avoiding reminders, so Redefine works across brain, body, emotions and behavior at the same time. Our goal is to help regulate the nervous system.
Trauma-focused therapy here includes DBR, a bottom-up, body-based approach that works with the physiological sequence of trauma stored in the brainstem, alongside EMDR, Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing and Internal Family Systems (IFS). Care is gender-specific, and women are in their own group.
- Levels of Care
PTSD Treatment at the Right Level of Care
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
The highest outpatient level of care at Redefine. Treatment fills most of the day and you go home each evening, which gives the clinical team the most time to work with you.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
More support than weekly therapy, with room in the week for work and family. Redefine tries to fit your treatment days around your schedule, and the final days are set by clinical needs, therapist recommendations and program availability.
Intensive Trauma Retreat
A concentrated, private stretch of trauma work, planned around an assessment and a custom itinerary. It can replace weekly therapy or run with it, and it can coordinate with a therapist you already see.

Therapies Available in Redefine's Programs
Redefine’s programs draw on more than 20 modalities, grouped below, with DBR leading the trauma-focused work. For PTSD, EMDR and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy have the strongest research support, and early research, including one randomized trial each, supports Somatic Experiencing and neurofeedback. Which therapies go into your plan is decided after assessment, not before it.
Deep Brain Reorienting
A bottom-up, body-based trauma therapy that works with the physiological sequence of trauma stored in the brainstem.
Neurofeedback
Real-time brain training, an integral part of treatment at Redefine, that targets patterns associated with focus, stress, and sleep.
Somatic Experiencing
Body-based trauma work that tracks physical sensations and stress responses at a pace you can manage.
EMDR
Reprocesses trauma memories that continue to activate stress responses.
- Why Redefine
Why Adults Choose Redefine for PTSD Treatment
Neurofeedback, Built Into Treatment
Neurofeedback is an integral part of treatment at Redefine. A client practices with real-time feedback on their own brain activity, which brings the brain into the work directly rather than only through conversation. How much of it each person has depends on their plan.
More Than 20 Modalities, One Clinical Direction
Trauma-focused therapy, neurofeedback and EXOMIND, PEMF and red light therapy, breathwork, yoga and meditation, psychiatry and coaching all sit under one clinical team that keeps track of what each part of the plan is for. That range gives the team several ways into the picture, rather than one method.
Clinicians Trained for the Work They Deliver
Each modality in your plan is delivered by a clinician with focused expertise in it. In trauma work, that matters. The person guiding a session has trained in the approach being used.
A Private Outpatient Setting
One-on-one sessions take place in private therapy rooms, with a client lounge and a meditation room for the time in between. It is a quiet, private place to do difficult work.
Accredited by The Joint Commission
The Joint Commission is an independent organization that evaluates health care providers against its standards. Its accreditation gives you an outside measure of the center before you call.
- Treatment Goals
Treatment Targets That Extend Into Everyday Life
Redefine’s modalities work with different parts of the clinical picture, from traumatic memories and distress tolerance to sleep, attention, relationships and daily functioning. The work is designed to go past insight to observable changes in how a person responds and functions.
- Recognize emotional and physical activation earlier.
- Reduce the intensity of reactions associated with trauma reminders.
- Build skills for managing distress without escalating the situation.
- Improve the ability to remain present during stress.
- Support improvements in mood, attention, sleep, and daily functioning when clinically appropriate.
- Translate clinical work into relationships, work, decision-making, and everyday life.
Our approach: Your assessment sets which of these targets your plan works on.
- Our Team

Residential Locations for Men and Women in Scottsdale
Redefine partners with Saguaro Recovery to offer residential locations for clients who are traveling for treatment or for those who need additional support. You attend your program days at the center and return to the house in between.
- Desert Rose and Mariposa for women, Cholla and Tortuga for men, all in Scottsdale.
- A house manager on site 24 hours a day
- Groceries, linens and household supplies included, with community dinners five nights a week
- Regular contact between the house and your clinical team
- A pool, high-speed internet and desk space for work at each home
- Availability varies by house and room, and admissions can walk you through openings and cost.

- FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How is complex PTSD different from PTSD?
Complex PTSD includes the core symptoms of PTSD and adds disturbances in how a person organizes their sense of self. That is how a 2021 review in the European Journal of Psychotraumatology describes the diagnosis, which was added to the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). Our guide to telling complex PTSD and PTSD apart goes into more detail.
Which trauma therapies does Redefine offer?
Redefine’s trauma therapies include DBR, EMDR, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, Somatic Experiencing, Brainspotting and Internal Family Systems (IFS), with neurofeedback alongside them. DBR is a trauma therapy for PTSD and complex trauma, especially where early attachment disruption has led to dissociative symptoms. Your clinical team decides which of these go into your plan, and in what order.
How long does treatment last?
It depends on the program, and on how treatment goes. There is no set end date at the start. In IOP, participation is reviewed month to month, and the decision to continue, adjust, step down or complete treatment rests on how you are progressing, your treatment goals, your symptoms and day-to-day functioning, and what the clinical team recommends. The Intensive Trauma Retreat works differently, as a concentrated block of days rather than an ongoing program.
Can Redefine work with my current psychiatrist?
With your authorization, yes. Redefine can coordinate with the psychiatrist or prescriber you work with outside the program, so both sides of your care stay connected. Admissions can explain how that would work in your case.
