Trauma Treatment Center in Scottsdale Built Around the Nervous System
Redefine Wellness & Treatment is a trauma treatment center in Scottsdale where adults find nervous-system-focused, trauma-informed care that starts where trauma can linger: in the body's stress responses. - Inside Trauma Treatment
Trauma Treatment Beyond Talk Therapy
Trauma work at Redefine Wellness & Treatment takes place in a private North Scottsdale outpatient center that holds Joint Commission accreditation. The care is nervous-system-focused and trauma-informed, so sessions pay attention to how the body reacts to reminders as well as to what happened. Deep Brain Reorienting leads the trauma therapies and neurofeedback is part of the plan. Psychiatric care comes from the same team. Adults can join the Partial Hospitalization Program for most of the weekday or the Intensive Outpatient Program on assigned days, and anyone who wants the work concentrated into a few days can book the private Intensive Trauma Retreat.
- Trauma-focused care for complex, developmental, relational, medical and secondary trauma, with DBR at the front
- Neurofeedback built into treatment rather than added on, with the amount set by your plan
- Gender-specific care, with women in their own group
- Psychiatric evaluation and medication management from the same team, when medication belongs in your plan
- PHP five days a week, or IOP on three assigned days so treatment fits around work and family
- Residential locations through Redefine's partner Saguaro Recovery for clients traveling in or wanting additional support

How Trauma Can Show Up in Daily Life
Memory and thinking
A memory can arrive uninvited, set off by a smell, a tone of voice or a date on the calendar. Some people find whole stretches of the past hard to recall, while for others one moment keeps replaying.
The body
The body can react before the mind has caught up: a racing heart, a clenched jaw, or exhaustion after an ordinary day. Some people feel numb, or oddly distant from their own body.
Behavior and habits
Staying busy, staying in control or staying away from certain situations can become the way through a week. Those habits can protect a person and narrow their life at the same time.
Work and relationships
Trust can be hard to extend, and small conflicts can land like large ones. At work, someone may perform well on the surface while running on high alert underneath.
- Types of Trauma
Types of Trauma Redefine Works With
Trauma that builds through repeated or prolonged experiences, often ones a person could not easily leave, rather than through a single event.
Neglect, instability or harm during the years when a person was still learning how safe the world and other people are.
Harm that happened inside close relationships, with a parent, a partner or someone trusted, which can make closeness itself feel risky later on.
Distress that stays after an illness, a frightening diagnosis, surgery or a hard hospital stay.
The weight carried by people who are exposed to other people's trauma, through their work or through caring for someone.
- The Science of Trauma
What's Happening in the Brain and Body After Trauma
Trauma is not held only as a story. A 2020 review describes how stressful experiences early in life can change the way the body’s stress response works, and how those changes can last into adulthood. That can be what trauma feels like from the inside: a reaction that arrives in the body before there is time to think.
So care here starts with the body. The memory matters too, and it is not the only way in. Body-based therapies, trauma processing and neurofeedback each reach a different part of what trauma leaves behind, and an assessment decides where your plan begins.
- Our Approach
How Redefine Works With Trauma
Trauma care at Redefine is built from the body up. Sessions work across brain, body, emotions and behavior, with attention to the stress responses that keep a person on guard as well as to what happened. Our goal is to help regulate the nervous system.
Redefine describes Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) as working from the bottom up: it focuses on body-based responses and on the physiological sequence of trauma held in the brainstem. In the trauma work here, DBR sits beside EMDR, Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
- Levels of Care
Trauma Treatment at the Right Level of Care
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
A full treatment day for when trauma is affecting most of the day, with time for trauma processing, body-based work and psychiatric care before you head home in the evening.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Regular trauma work through the week, with time left over for a job and home life. Which days you attend depends on clinical needs, what your therapist recommends and what the program has open.
Intensive Trauma Retreat
Several days of private, one-on-one trauma work in a single block, as an alternative to weekly sessions or an addition to them.
- Getting Started
How Trauma Treatment Starts at Redefine
You do not need to know which program or therapy you need before you call.
Talk with admissions
A phone conversation about what has been happening and what you have tried.
Check your coverage
Verify your insurance online, then admissions reviews your benefits and cost with you by phone.
Assessment and plan
A clinician assesses how trauma is showing up for you now and sets your plan, placing DBR and the other trauma therapies where they belong.
Start
Treatment begins on your program days, PHP or IOP, and you go home each evening.

Therapies Available in Redefine's Programs
Redefine’s programs draw on the full range of modalities below. For trauma, Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) leads. Among trauma therapies, EMDR and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy carry the strongest research support. Research on Somatic Experiencing and on neurofeedback for PTSD is earlier, with a randomized trial behind each. Which therapies go into your plan is decided after assessment, not before it.
Deep Brain Reorienting
A bottom-up, body-based trauma therapy that works with the physiological sequence of trauma stored in the brainstem.
EMDR
Reprocesses trauma memories that continue to activate stress responses.
Somatic Experiencing
Body-based trauma work that tracks physical sensations and stress responses at a pace you can manage.
Neurofeedback
Real-time brain training, an integral part of treatment at Redefine, that targets patterns associated with focus, stress, and sleep.
- Why Redefine
Why Adults Choose Redefine for Trauma Treatment
DBR at the Front of Trauma Work
Deep Brain Reorienting leads Redefine’s trauma therapies. It is a body-based approach, so trauma work here includes a way in that begins with how the body responds, not only with what a person can put into words.
More Than 20 Modalities, One Clinical Direction
Trauma therapies such as EMDR, Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing and IFS sit in one plan with neurofeedback, EXOMIND, breathwork, yoga, meditation, Reiki, PEMF, red light therapy, psychiatry and coaching, and one clinical team keeps track of all of it. For trauma, that range means a plan can change direction without changing providers.
The Nervous System Comes First
Nervous-system-focused care is the first principle of Redefine’s approach. In trauma work, that means attention to the startle, the tension and the constant scanning for danger, as well as to the memory itself.
Gender-Specific Trauma Treatment
Trauma treatment here is gender-specific, and Redefine runs no coed programs. You know before your first day who will be in the room with you.
Joint Commission Accredited Outpatient Care
Redefine holds accreditation from The Joint Commission, an outside organization that accredits health care providers. That gives you a measure of the center that does not come from Redefine itself.
- Treatment Goals
Treatment Targets That Extend Into Everyday Life
Redefine’s modalities work with different parts of the clinical picture, from traumatic memories and distress tolerance to sleep, attention, relationships and daily functioning. The work is designed to go past insight to observable changes in how a person responds and functions.
- Recognize emotional and physical activation earlier.
- Reduce the intensity of reactions associated with trauma reminders.
- Build skills for managing distress without escalating the situation.
- Improve the ability to remain present during stress.
- Support improvements in mood, attention, sleep, and daily functioning when clinically appropriate.
- Translate clinical work into relationships, work, decision-making, and everyday life.
- Our Team
Our Clinical Team
Psychiatric care and therapy at Redefine are coordinated by one clinical team, so each part of your plan works toward the same goals.

- Residential Locations
Residential Locations for Men and Women in Scottsdale
Redefine partners with Saguaro Recovery to offer residential locations for clients who are traveling for treatment or for those who need additional support. They are places to stay while you attend PHP or IOP, not a residential treatment program. Treatment happens at the outpatient center, and the stay is paid separately.
You attend your program days at the center and return to the house in between.
- Desert Rose and Mariposa for women, Cholla and Tortuga for men, all in Scottsdale.
- A house manager on site 24 hours a day
- Groceries, linens and household supplies included, with community dinners five nights a week
- Regular contact between the house and your clinical team
- A pool, high-speed internet and desk space for work at each home
- Availability varies by house and room, and admissions can walk you through openings and cost.

- FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a trauma treatment center?
It is a place where trauma is the focus of care rather than one topic among many, with clinicians trained in trauma therapies and more structure than a weekly appointment. At Redefine, that care is outpatient, in the three formats described above.
How is trauma treatment different from PTSD treatment here?
PTSD is a specific diagnosis. Trauma is wider: it includes experiences that never led to a PTSD diagnosis, and complex PTSD, which a 2021 review describes as the core symptoms of PTSD together with lasting problems in emotional regulation, self-image and relationships. If PTSD itself is your question, Redefine’s PTSD treatment page goes into that diagnosis.
Can I start with an intensive trauma retreat?
Yes. The Intensive Trauma Retreat does not require a formal diagnosis or any previous therapy, so it can be where trauma work begins. If you already see a therapist, Redefine can coordinate with them, and admissions can talk through whether the retreat or an ongoing program suits you better.
Is trauma treatment here separated by gender?
Yes. Redefine runs no coed programs, and women attend a group made up of women. Admissions can answer questions about your group when you call.
Does trauma treatment here fit around a job?
It can, in the Intensive Outpatient Program. Treatment takes place on assigned days, the other weekdays stay free, and your participation is reviewed each month. The Partial Hospitalization Program takes up most of each weekday, and the retreat takes a few consecutive days, so both need time set aside.
