Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) Therapy in Scottsdale

Deep Brain Reorienting, or DBR, is a trauma therapy that works with the physiological sequence of trauma stored in the brainstem. It works from the bottom up, through body-based responses, instead of managing symptoms from the top down. At Redefine in Scottsdale, DBR is one of more than 20 therapies available to adults across our outpatient programs. Joint Commission accredited.

Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) at Redefine in Scottsdale

DBR is a trauma therapy that taps into the brain's natural healing ability by accessing the physiological sequence of trauma stored in the brainstem. At Redefine it belongs to the same trauma family as EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, Brainspotting, and IFS. It is available through our partial hospitalization program and our intensive outpatient program. Retreat and individual formats exist too.

Joint Commission Accredited
Adults, Outpatient
Out-of-Network Provider
  • Bottom up, not top down. DBR avoids top-down symptom management and works through body-based responses instead, starting where the trauma sequence is stored rather than where the symptoms show.
  • The root event, not the label. DBR focuses less on the clinical diagnosis and more on identifying the root traumatic event or experience underneath it.
  • Part of a bigger plan. DBR never works alone here. Your clinical team combines it with the other therapies that fit your presentation, in one coordinated plan.

DBR is one modality. It works inside a plan built around you.

How to Start DBR Therapy in Scottsdale

Getting Started

Before anything is scheduled, you talk with our team by phone. We go through what has been happening and what you have already tried. A clinical assessment then shapes your plan, including whether DBR belongs in it. Redefine is an out-of-network provider, so verify your benefits before you start.

What happens first

Benefits verified before you commit

Trauma Family

DBR sits in the same trauma family as EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, Brainspotting, and Internal Family Systems, and Redefine offers all of them. Each works through its own mechanism. Your clinical team picks what fits your presentation, and changes the mix when your response says to.

Trauma therapies offered here
Deep Brain Reorienting, bottom up through the body
EMDR, with its own separate mechanism
Somatic Experiencing and Brainspotting
Internal Family Systems work

Levels of Care

DBR is offered within the levels of care Redefine runs. Partial hospitalization runs five days a week, 25 to 30 hours. Intensive outpatient runs three days, 9 to 12 hours. Your assessment decides the level; your plan decides the therapies inside it.

IOP: three days a week, 9 to 12 hours

How Does Deep Brain Reorienting Work?

1

Trauma Leaves a Sequence

Trauma is not only a memory. The body's physiological response to it is stored as a sequence in the brainstem, one of the oldest parts of the brain. DBR is built to access that stored sequence directly.

2

Buried Under Protection

Trauma memories are often buried under layers of emotional overwhelm, dissociation, or protective avoidance. That protection made sense at the time. It also makes healing difficult, because talk alone rarely reaches what is underneath.

3

Bottom Up, Not Top Down

Most approaches manage symptoms from the top down. DBR avoids that and works from the bottom up instead, focusing on body-based responses, so the work starts where the sequence is stored rather than where the symptoms surface.

4

Root Event, Not the Label

DBR focuses less on the clinical diagnosis and more on identifying the root traumatic event or experience. The label on your chart matters less here than the moment your nervous system has been carrying.

DBR is one part of a plan. How your sessions are structured and where DBR sits in your week are set by your clinical team after assessment, drawing on more than 20 other therapies as your response develops.

Who Does Deep Brain Reorienting Therapy Help?

PTSD and Complex Trauma

These are DBR's core clinical applications. When the response to a traumatic event stays stored in the body, symptoms can persist no matter how well you understand what happened. DBR approaches PTSD treatment from underneath the story, at the stored sequence itself. Individual results vary.

  • Built for PTSD and complex trauma
  • Body-based, paced by your clinician
  • Grounding and regulation alongside it

Dissociation and Early Attachment

DBR is applied especially where early attachment disruptions have led to dissociative symptoms. When checking out was how a younger you stayed safe, an approach that starts in the body can reach what conversation alone cannot. Our trauma treatment holds that work inside one plan. Individual results vary.

  • Attuned to early attachment disruption
  • Works where dissociation blocks talk therapy
  • Safety and pacing set by your clinician

When Trauma Shows Up Sideways

Emotional dysregulation from unresolved trauma can show up as substance use, disordered eating, or mood disturbances. Treating only the surface behavior leaves the driver running. For people carrying both, our dual diagnosis outpatient treatment holds the trauma work and the condition in one plan. Individual results vary.

  • Aimed at the root event under the behavior
  • Care for people with substance use disorders
  • Psychiatric coordination throughout

When Memories Stay Buried

Trauma memories are often buried under layers of emotional overwhelm, dissociation, or protective avoidance, which makes healing difficult. DBR does not push through those layers with willpower. It goes underneath them, to the physiological sequence the brainstem holds, and lets the brain's natural healing ability do the rest. Individual results vary.

  • No pressure to retell the story first
  • Works with protective avoidance, not against it
  • Taps the brain's natural healing ability

“I’m so happy to say I would 100% recommend this place over and over”

5 star review - graphic with 5 stars
What I was most happy about and sold me on getting therapy myself was how caring everyone is. And it’s not time limited. Like if you need an extra 20 mins cause it was a hard session then they will work with you to get that extra 20 mins. And they didn’t seem rushed to get to the next person. I’m so happy to say I would 100% recommend this place over and over.

BrainstemMechanism

Deep Brain Reorienting was described in the peer-reviewed literature by Corrigan and Christie-Sands as a trauma psychotherapy approach working with brainstem-level orienting responses, the level beneath thought and language.

23.1%Prevalence

In 2022, an estimated 59.3 million U.S. adults had any mental illness, which is 23.1% of all adults, per the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

50.6%Treatment Gap

Of those 59.3 million adults, 30.0 million, or 50.6%, received mental health treatment in the past year. Close to half received none at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Deep Brain Reorienting therapy?

Deep Brain Reorienting, or DBR, is a trauma therapy that taps into the brain’s natural healing ability by accessing the physiological sequence of trauma stored in the brainstem. It works from the bottom up, through body-based responses, rather than managing symptoms from the top down.
Neither is better across the board. DBR and EMDR are separate trauma therapies with separate mechanisms, and Redefine offers both. Your clinical team matches the modality to your presentation after assessment, and the plan changes when your response says it should.
We do not publish outcome claims for any therapy, because honest numbers depend on the person. What we can say is how DBR works: bottom up, through the body, aimed at the root traumatic event rather than the diagnosis. Individual results vary.
Adults working through PTSD and complex trauma, especially where early attachment disruptions have led to dissociative symptoms. Unresolved trauma can also show up as substance use, eating disorders, or mood disturbances, and DBR focuses on the root event underneath.
Yes. Redefine Wellness & Treatment offers DBR to adults at 8245 N 85th Way in Scottsdale, as one of more than 20 therapies across our outpatient programs and retreats. Redefine is an out-of-network provider, so verify your benefits before starting.
