Grief Therapy in Scottsdale

At Redefine Wellness & Treatment in Scottsdale, we provide intensive grief therapy within structured PHP and IOP programs. Our approach works at the nervous system level, combining therapies like somatic processing and neurofeedback, so grief that hasn’t responded to weekly counseling can finally shift.

Grief Work

Grief Therapy in Scottsdale, Arizona

Grief therapy at Redefine Wellness & Treatment operates within a structured PHP or IOP program where your clinical team monitors your progress daily and adjusts treatment as processing unfolds. We combine grief-focused talk therapy with neurofeedback and somatic modalities because grief that has persisted for months or years typically requires more than a single therapeutic approach. There is no prescribed timeline here. Treatment intensity matches the clinical need.

PHP & IOP Programs
Neurofeedback Paired
PGD-Informed Care
  • Somatic and Neurological Processing. Grief disrupts sleep architecture, immune function, and nervous system regulation. We use somatic therapy and neurofeedback to address grief where it is stored in the body, not only where it can be verbalized.
  • Structured for Prolonged Grief. When grief persists beyond what weekly therapy can resolve, the issue is often treatment intensity, not effort. Daily contact across multiple modalities is what PHP and IOP programs provide.
  • Co-Occurring Conditions Addressed Concurrently. Loss frequently presents alongside anxiety, depression, sleep disruption, and identity disturbance. Your treatment team addresses the full clinical picture so grief work is not interrupted by untreated symptoms.

Treatment plans are individualized around the nature of your loss, your clinical history, and your current symptom presentation.

Grief Therapy at Every Level of Care

Grief therapy session during PHP program at Redefine Wellness

Grief Work Within PHP

PHP provides the most supported environment for intensive grief processing. You're on-site five days a week, working with the same grief-trained clinician 2 to 3 times per week. That continuity matters. Grief requires trust, and trust requires consistency. Between individual sessions, your team integrates neurofeedback to regulate the emotional flooding that grief creates, somatic work to address the physical weight your body has been carrying, and grief-specific group processing with others who understand loss at a level your friends and family may not.

Individual grief sessions 2-3x per week
Somatic therapies for grief-locked memories
Neurofeedback between processing sessions
Somatic support for body-held grief
Grief-specific group processing
Psychiatry oversight and medication support
Grief therapy integrated into IOP treatment at Redefine Wellness

Grief Work Within IOP

IOP grief work runs three days a week for approximately 3 to 4 hours per day. It's designed for people who need more than weekly therapy but can maintain work or daily responsibilities, or for those stepping down from PHP who still need structured grief support. You'll receive individual grief sessions 1 to 2 times per week, paired with neurofeedback and group processing. Your clinical team still coordinates around your grief presentation, adjusting modalities as your processing evolves.

Grief sessions 1-2x per week
Neurofeedback integrated into schedule
Grief-focused group processing
Flexible scheduling (morning or evening)
Step-down from PHP or direct admission
Ongoing clinical team coordination

How Grief Work Happens at Redefine

1

Clinical Assessment of Your Grief

Your treatment team evaluates how grief is affecting your sleep, cognition, nervous system regulation, and daily functioning. This assessment distinguishes between acute grief and prolonged grief disorder and identifies co-occurring conditions that require concurrent treatment.

2

A Multimodal Treatment Plan

Based on your assessment, your team builds a plan combining grief-focused individual therapy with neurofeedback, somatic work, EMDR, and group processing. Each modality targets a different dimension of how grief is stored and expressed.

3

Daily Clinical Contact

In PHP or IOP, your clinicians see you multiple times per week. This frequency allows your team to track shifts in real time, adjust interventions when processing stalls, and provide structured support during grief surges that weekly therapy cannot accommodate.

4

Integration and Stabilization

As processing progresses, your team helps you rebuild daily structure, address identity changes that follow significant loss, and develop regulation skills that hold after the program ends. Discharge planning includes step-down recommendations and ongoing support coordination.

What to Expect
Program Format
PHP (5 days/week) or IOP (3-5 days/week) based on clinical need
Team-Based Care
Psychiatrist, therapist, and somatic specialists coordinating daily
Grief-Specific Groups
Process-oriented group sessions focused on loss, meaning, and shared experience
Flexible Timeline
Treatment length adapts to your clinical progress, typically 4-8 weeks

There is no stage model you need to follow. Your treatment plan is built around how grief is presenting clinically for you, not around a predetermined sequence. If your grief looks different from what you expected, that is not a problem to fix. It is where treatment begins.

Grief & The Brain & Nervous System

Types of Loss We Treat

  • Death of a spouse, partner, parent, child, or close friend
  • Sudden or traumatic loss including accident, suicide, or overdose
  • Anticipatory grief during a terminal illness or progressive decline
  • Pregnancy loss, miscarriage, stillbirth, or infertility-related grief
  • Disenfranchised grief that others minimize or fail to recognize
  • Ambiguous loss including estrangement, incarceration, or cognitive decline in a loved one
  • Loss of identity, career, health, or independence following a major life change
  • Cumulative grief from multiple losses occurring within a compressed timeframe

Signs Grief May Need More Than Weekly Therapy

  • The loss dominates most of your day, making it difficult to focus on work, relationships, or basic tasks
  • You feel emotionally numb or detached, and positive experiences no longer register the way they used to
  • Part of your identity feels like it disappeared with the person you lost, and you don't recognize yourself
  • You've started avoiding people, places, or situations connected to the loss, and your world is getting smaller
  • Anxiety or panic spikes around anniversaries, holidays, or reminders you can't always predict
  • Sleep has changed, appetite has changed, or your body is producing symptoms your doctor can't explain
  • Depression that started or deepened after the loss and hasn't improved with outpatient treatment
  • One hour a week isn't enough time to process what you're carrying, and you know it

5 star review - graphic with 5 stars
What I was most happy about and sold me on getting therapy myself was how caring everyone is. And it’s not time limited. Like if you need an extra 20 mins cause it was a hard session then they will work with you to get that extra 20 mins. And they didn’t seem rushed to get to the next person. I’m so happy to say I would 100% recommend this place over and over.

The Research on Grief Therapy & Treatment

Frequently Asked Questions

How Is Grief Therapy Different From Regular Therapy?
Most people in weekly therapy for grief spend one hour processing something painful, then go home and spend six days managing the aftermath alone. That rhythm can sustain coping, but it rarely shifts the grief itself. At Redefine, grief therapy is embedded in a structured program—PHP or IOP—where your clinical team sees you multiple times per week, monitors your processing between sessions, and adjusts the approach in real time. We combine EMDR, somatic work, and neurofeedback to work at the nervous system level. It’s a fundamentally different treatment density than what weekly outpatient can provide.
Prolonged grief disorder was formally added to the DSM-5-TR and the ICD-11 as a distinct clinical diagnosis. It’s characterized by intense, persistent grief that lasts beyond 12 months and significantly disrupts daily functioning—persistent yearning, identity disruption, emotional numbness, difficulty reengaging with life. PGD isn’t “being sad for a long time.” It’s a condition in which the grief response has become stuck in the nervous system. It requires targeted treatment—not just more time.
Yes. EMDR was originally developed for PTSD, but it’s increasingly used for grief and loss. It targets the specific moments your brain locked around the death—the phone call, the hospital, the funeral, the last conversation you had. EMDR doesn’t erase those memories. It helps your brain reprocess them so the emotional charge drops and your nervous system stops treating the loss as a current threat. At Redefine, we pair EMDR with somatic work and neurofeedback for a more complete grief processing experience.
There’s no universal timeline. A single acute loss may respond to 4–8 weeks of intensive treatment. Complicated grief—especially when layered with trauma, guilt, or unresolved attachment—often requires a longer course. In PHP, grief work happens 2–3 times per week alongside neurofeedback and somatic regulation, so progress typically accelerates compared to weekly outpatient. We don’t set an artificial endpoint. We track progress by nervous system regulation, functional improvement, and your own felt sense of shift.
They overlap, but they’re clinically distinct. Grief is a response to loss. Depression can exist without a clear loss event. Grief tends to be episodic—triggered by reminders, anniversaries, sensory cues—while depression is often more pervasive and constant. That said, unresolved grief can develop into a depressive episode over time, and many people experience both simultaneously. At Redefine, we assess for both and build a treatment plan that addresses the grief and any co-occurring depression, anxiety, or trauma that’s wrapped around it.
Grief therapy delivered by a licensed clinician within a structured PHP or IOP program is typically covered by insurance, especially when there’s a qualifying clinical diagnosis—prolonged grief disorder, adjustment disorder, or major depressive episode related to bereavement. At Redefine, we work with most major insurers on an out-of-network basis and help clients maximize their benefits. Our admissions team handles all verification and authorization. You can call (888) 546-5580 or take our level of care quiz to find out which program fits your situation.
