Kratom & 7-OH Treatment Scottsdale
Redefine Wellness & Treatment is a Joint Commission-accredited mental health treatment center specializing in kratom and 7-OH dependence. We treat it as the opioid-receptor disorder it is, not an herbal supplement habit. Our PHP and IOP programs combine neurofeedback, evidence-based therapy, and medication coordination to address both the kratom use and the condition driving it.

Specialized Kratom Use Disorder Treatment in Scottsdale, Arizona
- Outpatient, Not Residential Structured daily treatment for those tapering with medical support, past withdrawal, or needing intensive care without leaving their life.
- Neurofeedback for Dual-System Dysregulation Kratom disrupts opioid receptor signaling and adrenergic pathways simultaneously. Neurofeedback is available to target both the craving patterns and the arousal instability this creates.
- Co-Occurring Treatment Nine out of ten kratom users report chronic pain. Over 60% report anxiety or depression. Your clinical team addresses what started the cycle alongside the dependence itself.
- 7-OH Escalation Assessment Concentrated 7-OH products bind opioid receptors roughly 100 times more strongly than standard kratom leaf. Your care plan reflects what you were actually taking.
- 20+ Modalities, No Standard Protocol More tools than most outpatient programs offer. Your clinical team determines which combination makes sense for you.
Partial Hospitalization Program for Kratom Use Disorder
PHP is the right starting point when kratom or 7-OH dependence is affecting your daily functioning, or when you need medical support during the withdrawal and stabilization phase. Five days a week, we combine medication coordination with neurofeedback to address opioid receptor dysregulation, somatic therapy for the physical symptoms of withdrawal and early recovery, and evidence-based treatment for the pain, anxiety, or depression that drove kratom use in the first place. You return home each evening.
- Medication coordination for withdrawal and stabilization
- Neurofeedback for opioid receptor dysregulation
- Daily breathwork and somatic experiencing
- Co-occurring pain, anxiety, and depression treatment
- Kratom pharmacology psychoeducation
- Individual and group therapy
Intensive Outpatient Program for Kratom Use Disorder
IOP provides structured clinical support while you maintain your work and family responsibilities. For kratom dependence, the challenge in early recovery is that the substance is legal, accessible, and marketed as harmless. IOP gives you the accountability, skills training, and ongoing neurofeedback support to manage cravings and triggers in your daily environment, not in an isolated residential setting where those triggers don't exist.
- Continued medication management and taper support
- Neurofeedback maintenance sessions
- CBT and DBT skills for triggers and cravings
- Relapse prevention for legal, accessible substances
- Co-occurring condition treatment
- Group process and peer accountability
Aftercare & Continuing Support for Kratom Recovery
Kratom is sold in gas stations, convenience stores, and online. Recovery from kratom dependence means building a sustainable life around a substance you will continue to encounter. Aftercare keeps the clinical structure in place while you practice the skills and regulation strategies from treatment in your daily environment. We continue treating the underlying condition that started the cycle so you don't need kratom to manage it.
- Medication check-ins with prescribing team
- Neurofeedback booster sessions
- Continued co-occurring condition treatment
- Alumni community and peer support
- Structured transition planning
- Relapse response protocol
- Curated Programs
How We Treat Kratom and 7-OH Use Disorder
Do I Need Detox Before Starting Treatment?
Redefine does not provide medical detox on-site. Most people with kratom dependence can begin PHP or IOP without a separate detox admission.
Kratom Withdrawal Timeline
Symptoms typically begin 12 to 24 hours after your last dose and resolve within 5 to 7 days. Withdrawal is uncomfortable but not medically dangerous in the way alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal can be. Heavy users and those using concentrated 7-OH products may benefit from medical support during this phase.
Medication Support When Needed
For clients who need it, our psychiatric team can coordinate buprenorphine for withdrawal management and early stabilization. Many clients begin PHP or IOP during or shortly after the withdrawal phase rather than completing a separate detox admission.
Already Past Withdrawal?
Many kratom users taper on their own or stop before reaching out. If that is you, no detox step is required. Call us to discuss where you are and we will figure out the right starting point.
Not sure where you fall? Call us. We will talk through your use history and recommend the right starting point.

Kratom and Chronic Pain Treatment in Scottsdale, Arizona
Our Approach
Pain is the most common reason people start using kratom, and the dependence that follows cannot be treated without addressing the pain itself. At Redefine, PEMF therapy and somatic experiencing target the physical pain pathways directly. Neurofeedback is available to address the pain processing patterns that kratom has disrupted. CBT for chronic pain builds skills for managing flare-ups without reaching for a substance. Your clinical team builds a plan that treats both conditions simultaneously.
What Is Kratom Use for Pain Self-Management?
Mitragynine, kratom's primary alkaloid, provides real analgesic effects through partial opioid receptor agonism. Many people discover kratom as an alternative to prescription painkillers, and it works, initially. Over time, tolerance builds, doses increase, and dependence develops while the original pain condition remains untreated. Users of concentrated 7-OH products often escalate faster because 7-hydroxymitragynine binds opioid receptors roughly 100 times more strongly than standard kratom leaf.
- Started kratom for a legitimate pain condition
- Dose has increased significantly over time
- Pain returns worse when you miss a dose
- Tried to stop but the pain was unbearable
- Using kratom instead of prescribed treatment
- Switched from powder to extracts or 7-OH products
Kratom as Opioid Replacement Treatment in Scottsdale, Arizona
Our Approach
Using kratom to get off opioids makes pharmacological sense as harm reduction, but without clinical oversight it often trades one opioid-receptor dependence for another. Our psychiatric team can coordinate buprenorphine when appropriate for a supervised transition. EMDR and brainspotting address the trauma that frequently underlies opioid histories. Neurofeedback is available to target the craving and reward pathway dysregulation that both opioids and kratom create.
What Is Kratom as Opioid Replacement?
Roughly 41% of US kratom users report using it specifically to reduce or stop opioid use, and 94.8% of kratom users with a prior substance use disorder started kratom after discontinuing those substances. Kratom's partial agonism at mu-opioid receptors provides enough activity to ease withdrawal and reduce cravings for stronger opioids. The problem is that this unsupervised substitution creates its own dependence while the underlying reasons for opioid use remain unaddressed.
- Started kratom to get off prescription painkillers or heroin
- Kratom withdrawal feels like opioid withdrawal
- Using kratom daily to avoid feeling sick
- Tried to stop kratom and couldn't
- History of opioid use before kratom
- Nobody knows you switched to kratom
Kratom and Anxiety Treatment in Scottsdale, Arizona
Our Approach
Kratom and anxiety create a reinforcing loop. At low doses, kratom's adrenergic receptor activity produces a calming effect that temporarily reduces anxiety. Dependence develops, and withdrawal amplifies anxiety beyond its original baseline. At Redefine, neurofeedback is available to regulate the arousal dysregulation that both anxiety and kratom withdrawal produce. DBT builds concrete skills for managing anxiety without a substance. Somatic experiencing addresses the body-level activation that anxiety creates.
What Is Kratom and Anxiety Co-Occurrence?
Over 67% of kratom users report anxiety as a primary reason for use. Kratom provides short-term relief through its activity at both opioid and adrenergic receptors, which reinforces continued use. Over time, the nervous system adapts and anxiety worsens between doses, creating a cycle where kratom feels necessary to function normally. Many adults arrive at treatment not recognizing how much their kratom use has been driven by anxiety they have never fully addressed.
- Using kratom to calm anxiety or social stress
- Anxiety worse between doses than before kratom
- Panic or restlessness when you miss a dose
- Relying on kratom before stressful situations
- Prior anxiety diagnosis before kratom use
- Feeling unable to function without a dose
Kratom and Depression Treatment in Scottsdale, Arizona
Our Approach
Depression and kratom dependence require simultaneous treatment. At Redefine, neurofeedback is available for the mood regulation patterns that both conditions disrupt. CBT and DBT address the thought patterns and behavioral withdrawal that depression produces. Somatic experiencing works with the body-level heaviness and fatigue. Your clinical team determines which combination makes sense based on what is driving the depression and how kratom has been interacting with it.
What Is Kratom and Depression Co-Occurrence?
Sixty-five percent of kratom users report using it for depressive symptoms. Kratom's opioid receptor activity provides temporary mood elevation, but chronic use disrupts the brain's natural reward and mood regulation systems. Withdrawal deepens depression below its pre-kratom baseline. Case reports show depression often resolves after kratom cessation and transition to appropriate clinical treatment, suggesting the kratom itself was maintaining or worsening the depressive cycle.
- Started kratom because it lifted your mood
- Depression worse on days without kratom
- Low motivation or emotional flatness between doses
- Using kratom to get out of bed or face the day
- Prior depression diagnosis before kratom use
- Feeling hopeless about stopping
Kratom and PTSD Treatment in Scottsdale, Arizona
Our Approach
Kratom and PTSD are treated together at Redefine, not in sequence. EMDR and somatic experiencing process stored trauma without requiring repeated verbal retelling. Neurofeedback is available to regulate the hypervigilant nervous system patterns that PTSD produces and kratom was numbing. Brainspotting and IFS address the parts of the system that adopted kratom as a coping strategy. Treating the kratom without the trauma produces incomplete results.
What Is Kratom and PTSD Co-Occurrence?
PTSD is frequently comorbid with kratom use. The nervous system dysregulation that trauma creates, including hypervigilance, emotional flooding, and difficulty tolerating distress, makes kratom's sedating opioid effects a highly effective short-term numbing tool. Over time, kratom prevents the nervous system from processing what happened, keeping both the trauma response and the substance use in place. Many people do not connect their kratom use to past experiences until treatment begins.
- Using kratom to quiet intrusive memories or flashbacks
- Kratom use increased after a traumatic event
- Using kratom to sleep or feel safe
- Emotional numbness combined with daily use
- Hypervigilance that kratom temporarily relieves
- History of trauma with ongoing kratom dependence
High-Functioning Kratom Use Disorder Treatment in Scottsdale, Arizona
Our Approach
Kratom users tend to be employed, college-educated adults ages 31 to 50. Many maintain careers and relationships while dependent. Our outpatient programs are built for this: discreet, structured around work schedules, no residential requirement. Neurofeedback sessions fit into a professional calendar. Individual therapy focuses on dismantling the rationalization that kratom is harmless because it is legal and you are still functioning.
What Is High-Functioning Kratom Use?
Kratom's legal status and marketing as a natural supplement make it uniquely easy to rationalize. High-functioning kratom use disorder looks like normal life from the outside: career intact, relationships maintained, responsibilities met. The dependence shows up in subtler ways: organizing your day around doses, inability to travel without supply, escalating from powder to concentrated 7-OH products, and failed attempts to stop that nobody else knows about.
- Performing well at work but can't skip a dose
- Schedule organized around when you can take kratom
- Telling yourself it's just a supplement
- Tried to stop and couldn't
- Ordering in bulk or stocking up before trips
- Nobody in your life knows the full extent
Kratom and Polysubstance Use Treatment in Scottsdale, Arizona
Our Approach
Kratom rarely exists in isolation. Treatment must assess and address all active substance use, not just the kratom. Our psychiatric team manages medication across multiple substances when needed. DBT builds skills for regulating the impulse patterns that drive polysubstance use. Neurofeedback is available for the overlapping craving and reward dysregulation. IFS and EMDR address the underlying drivers that no single substance was fully managing.
What Is Kratom and Polysubstance Use?
Research shows 71 to 92% of kratom users report concurrent use of other substances, including cannabis, benzodiazepines, alcohol, and nicotine. Kratom users with polysubstance patterns often use different substances for different functions throughout the day: kratom for energy and pain in the morning, cannabis or benzodiazepines for sleep at night. The combination of kratom with benzodiazepines or alcohol is clinically concerning due to compounding central nervous system effects.
- Using kratom alongside alcohol, cannabis, or benzos
- Different substances for different times of day
- Overall substance use increased since starting kratom
- Using one substance to manage withdrawal from another
- Multiple failed quit attempts across substances
- History of substance use predating kratom
- Types of Kratom Use Disorder
Kratom Use Disorder Looks Different for Everyone
Brain & Nervous System
Kratom disrupts two receptor systems simultaneously: opioid receptors that drive craving and dependence, and adrenergic receptors that regulate arousal and energy. This dual disruption is why kratom users experience both sedation and stimulant effects depending on dose, and why recovery requires direct neurological intervention. Modalities include:
Substance-Specific Therapy
Kratom's legal status, "natural" marketing, and easy availability create treatment challenges that other substances don't. Many clients don't realize they have developed an opioid-receptor dependence. Psychoeducation on kratom pharmacology is a core component, and medication coordination is available for clients who need support during withdrawal and stabilization. Modalities include:
- Medication-Assisted Treatment Coordination
- Kratom Pharmacology Psychoeducation
- Relapse Prevention Planning
- Motivational Interviewing
Underlying Roots
The vast majority of kratom users began using to self-treat something else: chronic pain, anxiety, depression, PTSD, or opioid withdrawal. Until that root condition is treated, the drive to use persists. Your clinical team addresses what started the cycle alongside the kratom dependence from day one. Modalities include:
- EMDR
- Internal Family Systems
- Brainspotting
- Somatic Experiencing
Body & Recovery
Kratom withdrawal and early recovery involve significant physical symptoms: muscle pain, GI disruption, insomnia, and fatigue. Chronic use also numbs the body's natural signaling. Body-based modalities accelerate physical stabilization and help clients reconnect with sensations they have been suppressing for months or years. Modalities include:
- Yoga & Meditation
- Movement Therapy
- Mindfulness Practices
- Lifestyle Coaching
Your treatment plan is built around what is actually driving your kratom use. Your clinical team uses neurofeedback and comprehensive assessment to determine which combination of our 20+ modalities will work best for you.

- FAQs
Your Questions, Answered
How do I know if I need treatment for kratom use disorder
If your dose has increased over time, you experience withdrawal symptoms when you stop, or you started kratom to manage pain, anxiety, or opioid withdrawal and now can’t quit, treatment can help. Kratom acts on opioid receptors, and dependence develops the same way it does with other opioid-receptor substances.
Will I need medication during kratom treatment?"
Some clients benefit from buprenorphine during withdrawal and early stabilization, especially those using concentrated 7-OH products or high daily doses. Dr. Michael Yasinski, MD, our trauma-informed psychiatrist, oversees all medication decisions and tailors them to each client’s use history.
What is the difference between IOP and PHP for kratom treatment?
Do you treat the underlying issues or just the kratom use?
What happens after I finish the program?"

What the Research Says About Kratom Dependence
Kratom research is newer than the alcohol or opioid literature, but the clinical picture is increasingly clear. These findings come from peer-reviewed studies and national survey data.
National survey data shows approximately 2 million US adults used kratom in the past year. Use is concentrated among adults with pre-existing pain, mental health conditions, and substance use histories.
A meta-analysis of 17 randomized controlled trials found a large effect of neurofeedback on addiction symptoms across substance use disorders, with stronger results for substance addictions than behavioral addictions.
In a large cohort study, structured outpatient treatment with medication produced outcomes comparable to residential care. For patients receiving medication, there was no retention advantage to residential over outpatient.
Why Kratom Requires More Than Detox
Over 90% of kratom users report chronic pain as a reason for use. Over 60% report anxiety or depression. Treating the kratom dependence without addressing the condition that started it produces incomplete results. At Redefine, your clinical team treats both from day one, combining neurofeedback, evidence-based therapy, somatic approaches, and medication coordination when needed.
